Bringing soil back to life

Part 1 - Beginning

How our society ended up killing our soils - and killing is the proper word, for inanimate things are destroyed, and living things are killed - is a long story.

We ployed, we tilled, we fallowed (left soil without growing plants), we applied herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and chemical nitrogen. Like the chemicals (“-cides”) we applied, we were against life. To our partial defence, we were largely ignorant about soil.

It’s a good thing we have learned a lot, and learned damn fast, too. According to estimates, with our current common practices, the fertile part of soil - the topsoil - will be gone in 60 years. Our children's lifetimes.
